Īero-dynamic bearings, although capable of running at very low friction, are not free from troublesome features. Therefore, their application is limited by cost, reliability, space, and environment. This requirement causes some practical difficulties because additional equipment is needed. However, aero-static bearings demand continuous supply of pressurised air. They are characterised by high precision of motion and the load capacity independent of relative speed of contacting surfaces. In order to meet such requirements a new concepts of bearing design must be explored as the traditional bearings are no longer adequate.Īero-static bearings have been successfully used in many precision devices. Such application areas as laser scanners, machine tools for micro and nano-level machining, non-contact transport of silicon chips and many others require bearings with ultra-high precision of motion, extremely low friction, low wear and oil-free operation. With the development of high-technology engineering the demand for machinery with ultra precision movement of constituent components is rapidly growing.
